YoungArts Distinguished Educators in the Arts Program

The YoungArts Distinguished Educators in the Arts program has been highly respected for recognizing outstanding high school educators in the arts since its inception in 1991.

The awards selection process is unique because the educators are selected by their students, both past and present. Each YoungArts applicant provides the names of two educators who have had the most profound influence on their artistic development. These educators have taken an active role in their students’ education, devoting their personal time and energy, often above and beyond the call of duty, to encourage and shape the artistic development of their students. Once the YoungArts Finalists have been selected by our adjudicators, three educators (representing the visual, performing and the literary arts) who have been nominated by the current years’ applicants/participants are selected to receive the YoungArts Distinguished Educators in the Arts award. These three Educators are awarded a $1,000 Distinguished Educator stipend.

The 2010 awardees are: Literary Arts Educator of the Year: Scott Gould, writing teacher, South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts, Greenville, South Carolina Performing Arts Educator of the Year: Jan Mark Sloman, private violin teacher, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas, Texas Visual Arts Educator of the Year: Ellen Abramson, art instructor, Design & Architecture Senior High (DASH), Miami, Florida.
